Samten Osel Ling Retreat Center

To preserve and propagate the unbroken lineage of Dzogchen practice in modern times, H. H. Penor Rinpoche established Samten Osel Ling Retreat Center. The center was first inaugurated in 1985 and since then more than sixty practitioners have successfully completed the rigorous three-year retreat course going on to teach the dharma around the world.

In 1997 the center was moved to a newly-constructed, larger facility with accommodation for thirty students, a prayer hall, kitchen and store room. This has allowed a larger group of retreatants to train day and night without distraction.

About Three Year Retreats
Because of their preciousness, a great emphasis is placed on safe-guarding of the Dzogchen teachings so they are not mis-used. Because a practitioner is often officially qualified to teach after conducting such a retreat, and so that they may attain common and supreme accomplishments swiftly, it is vital that they strictly maintain the Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Vajrayana vows.

Individuals able to do this, and who have completed a certain number of accumulations of mantras and prayers, may qualify to enter into this retreat which actually lasts three years, three months and three days. This is the length of time required to complete the meditational training and recitations of the three roots (lama, yidam and dakini). After receiving and understanding the transmissions, practice is stressed. The practices include Ngondro all the way to the completion stages of Dzogchen Trekchod and Togyal. At the conclusion of the retreat, retreatants undergo examination of their realizations and spiritual experiences. Outstanding practitioners are awarded with the title Vajra Archarya (Sanskrit, Tibetan: Dorje Lopon).
